Moving into a new rental can be exciting, but a little preparation can save you from unnecessary stress. Use this simple move-in checklist to start your lease on the right foot.
Before Moving Day
Confirm your move-in date and time with your landlord or property manager. Make sure you have the keys, access codes, parking information, and any instructions you need.
You should also arrange utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet before you arrive.
Document the Property’s Condition
Before unpacking, walk through the entire property and take clear photos or videos of every room. Pay special attention to walls, floors, appliances, windows, doors, and existing damage.
Compare your findings with the move-in inspection report and report anything that isn't already documented. Keeping a record can help prevent disputes when your lease ends.
Clean Before Unpacking
Even if the property looks clean, it's much easier to deep-clean an empty home. Wipe down kitchen cabinets, appliances, bathrooms, floors, and other frequently touched surfaces before your boxes take over.
Check the Essentials
Test the lights, faucets, toilets, heating or cooling system, appliances, smoke detectors, locks, and windows. If something isn't working properly, notify your landlord or property manager as soon as possible.
Keep Important Documents Handy
Save a copy of your signed lease, inspection report, landlord's contact information, utility confirmations, and any move-in instructions. Keeping everything together digitally makes it much easier to find when you need it.
Make Your First Night Easier
Pack a separate box or bag with essentials such as toiletries, medications, chargers, toilet paper, basic cleaning supplies, towels, bedding, and a change of clothes. You'll thank yourself when you're surrounded by boxes and don't want to search for everything.
Final Move-In Check
Once everything is in place, take one final walk through the property. Make sure doors and windows lock properly, you have all the keys you need, and any agreed-upon repairs or issues have been communicated.
A few hours of preparation can make your move significantly smoother—and give you peace of mind from the very first day of your lease.
